God, my Cloud

God my Cloud. Sunset in Jamaica – Photograph by Josephine

“What’s with the clouds?” The people of Jericho questioned as the cloud-led band of Israelites approached. In fear, they locked their gates against this weaponless group of people whom they heard: received daily bread from divine sources, drank water from gushing dry rocks, had diseases cured by gazing at a snake, and routed their enemies with music! Clearly, these were special people led by an unparalleled God!

Imagine with me the feeling of safety and belonging! Kept cool during the day by white, billowy clouds that at sunset, become bright orange-red pillars of protection and warmth! For Israel, this cloud  signified the presence of Jehovah God fulfilling His promise to guide and protect them through thick-and-thin as they journeyed to the land He had promised them.

God’s promise remains today. He will go before us to guide in our interactions and behind us to guard against the unseen. As we gaze at today’s clouds let’s be reminded— we need no weapons of aggression because God’s unchanging promise is to walk with us through all situations and circumstances.
