Morning Dew #26

God, my Security

Are you a doormat or a stepping stone?

You are pumped-up about an exciting opportunity for advancement. Ability? Check! Experience? Check! Then . . . Passed over . . . Ugh! There is raging disappointment and for some,  bitterness.

King David’s resumé as leader was unmatched. He decided to use his skills, and resources to design and build a magnificent sanctuary in praise of God. But no. God said, “I prefer your young, inexperienced son Solomon!” David didn’t hesitate. He handed over the resources, and enlisted his counselors’ full loyalty and support for Solomon.

Stepping stones recognize their value to the work and nurture those around them; doormats see themselves as fatalistic victims of circumstance. Stepping stones intentionally create opportunities for growth; doormats wish change but are afraid to try. Stepping stones rejoice in the success of others; doormats grow morose and despondent.

David was a willing stepping stone. He gave God control, and so he nurturingly said to Solomon, “Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God—my God—will be with you.” 1 Chronicle2 28: 20

Dear Lord, make me a willing stepping stone to mentor the inexperienced and nurture the abilities of those You place in my influence. Amen.
